Caring for patients doesn’t just happen in the hospital.
COVID-19 is a life-threatening disease. Every day we hear about heroic healthcare workers in hospitals. As a geriatrician (physician specializing in care of the elderly), I know that caring for patients doesn’t just happen in the hospital. Almost all care for frail patients is done at home by caregivers, both family and hired. You are on the frontline, providing care and love, 24 hours a day, year-round.
Now, with the COVID-19 crisis, you are being called upon to do more than ever. It’s very tough. Information is confusing and changes daily. You want to be a calm and effective caregiver, but everyday life has changed dramatically.
The isolation and lack of support for caregivers has frustrated me. Every day, as I see patients, talk with other doctors and keep up with COVID-19 facts, I know that caregivers are on their own. That is why I have been working as fast as I can to create a website that has clear and practical information for caregivers.
Aloha, I’m Dr. Warren Wong
My dream is to build a community of support for caregivers. We are stronger when we work together. I learned this long ago when I worked as a physician in San Francisco at On Lok Senior Health Services, the first location of the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). Most of my career since then has been in Hawai’i. I’ve been a frontline Doctor, a Professor, a health care leader and an advocate. At this especially critical time, my heart tells me to build a community. We can share information, stand together, support each other and be strong . Please consider becoming a member.
